Before you view
Do the paperwork checks first — they cost nothing and rule out most bad cars.
- Check the MOT history online for mileage consistency and repeated advisories.
- Confirm an HPI check: no outstanding finance, insurance write-off or theft marker.
- Ask for the service history and how recently cambelt or chain work was done.
On the test drive
Start the car from cold. Drive a mix of village 30 limits and a stretch of A14 or A12 so the gearbox, brakes and suspension are all loaded. Listen with the radio off.
Your rights buying from a dealer
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a car sold by a dealer must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. That protection does not exist in a private sale — which is why a warranted dealer car is usually the safer purchase.
Frequently asked questions
- What checks should I do before buying a used car?
- MOT history, HPI/finance check, service history, tyre condition, a cold start and a mixed-road test drive. A dealer should provide all of this without hesitation.
- Is a used car warranty worth it?
- Yes for most buyers. Every car at Mint Cars Needham Market includes an RAC warranty and RAC breakdown cover, with extended options available.
