Insurance group matters more than purchase price for most new drivers. Stay in groups 1–10, avoid modifications, and consider a telematics policy if you mainly drive locally.
Do not compromise on these
A cheap car with poor brakes or bald tyres is expensive very quickly.
- At least four-star safety rating with ABS and stability control.
- Matching, legal tyres with 4 mm or more of tread.
- A clean HPI check — no outstanding finance, theft marker or write-off record.
- A recent MOT with no advisories on corrosion or suspension.
